In October, Gladden Community House hosted a wonderful group of almost 20 volunteers from Geben Communication. They helped with the revitalization of senior community member’s homes. The group was split into two so that we could reach two senior homeowners. With supplies provided by Gladden, such as yard waste bags, hand gardening tools, rakes, and gardening gloves, and also power landscaping tools such as weed whackers, a pruner, and leaf-blower, lent to us by Keep Columbus Beautiful, volunteers went to work in the front and back yards of the home. Many bags of grass and weeds were removed and bagged. The fence was cleared of overgrowth of weeds. Sticks and some garbage were found and removed from the property. The homeowner was relieved and thankful for the help.
The other group of volunteers from Geben worked to repaint the living and dining room of another senior from the community. She wanted to brighten up her living room and chose a beautiful shade of light green. Volunteers worked to ready the rooms by moving furniture, taping off areas to paint, painted the walls, and put everything back so she could go on about her day as scheduled. She loved the results and says she has gotten many compliments.
We appreciate Geben’s commitment to their community. They were open, friendly, hard working, and motivated. Heather Whaling, founder/president of Geben Communication, serves on Gladden’s Board. She created the PR firm to help companies excel in a social world. Volunteering is so important to Geben they made it a House Rule. “Do well by doing good.”
We are grateful to have volunteer involvement and board involvement at the participation level that we do. We cannot do the work we do without volunteers!
Current Volunteer Opportunities
Homework Help Tutor: Our After School Program offers Homework Help to students K-12 in the Franklinton community. The graduation rate in our neighborhood is just 50% and we are hoping to provide our youth with as much extra support as possible. We are looking for volunteers to provide homework assistance in a small group setting during our After School Programming hours. This is an excellent way to provide academic support to youth while building positive relationships with our students!
Food Pantry Assistant: Gladden Community House runs one of Central Ohio’s largest Food Pantries. We typically serve between 1,000 and 1,200 families a month! With the high need for food comes a high need of help distributing it. We are looking for volunteers to stock shelves, unpack boxes, help clients through our food pantry, and enter client information into an electronic database. This is an excellent way to get to know members of the Franklinton Community while helping us provide people with basic needs!
Home Deliveries of Food to Seniors/Disabled Residents: One of the many services the Gladden Food Pantry provides is home deliveries to seniors and disabled residents who are unable to come to our pantry on their own accord. We are looking for volunteers to use their own transportation to assist us with making these deliveries on Friday mornings and/or afternoons. This opportunity is an excellent way to serve some of our residents who are in need of special care!
Videographer: Gladden Community House is looking for volunteers with a passion for videography to shoot and edit videos to help us tell the larger Columbus community about the important work we do! This volunteer opportunity is a great way to be creative and support our agency as we serve the Franklinton Community!
